Better than tears from a clown...

Capcom continues their dominance as <i?the premier 3rd party current gen developer with yet another great game, known as Devil May Cry 4. Let me just say that this game surpassed all expectations that I had for it. I own two of the previous games in the series (1 and 3), and even though I enjoy them, I'm not exactly a big DMC fan. However this game changed the way I looked at the series, and has raised my expectations for all other action games that are coming out (here's looking at you Ninja Gaiden 2).

So why did I enjoy this game so much more than the previous games in the series? That is hard to say... the solid gameplay has always been there, in fact many people would even say that the combat system in DMC3 is much more deep tahn in DMC4. The game is a lot less frustrating and more forgiving compared to 3. That definately had to be my biggest compliant with that game, losing at a boss fight and having to play the entire level over again!

While DMC3 was still a decent looking game last gen, playing it after playing Ninja Gaiden was hard, and going back to 3 after playing 4 is even harder... Unfortunately my PS3 does not play my US PS2 games, so I'm not able to comment on how DMC3 may look upscaled, but going back to that game on the PS2 with component cables was very hard. DMC4 may not be the best looking game right now, but it is easily the best looking action game, and holds up very well amongst all other games on the 360 and PS3. The camera however seems to have taken a bit of a fall, as there were various times where it switched on me, causing me to run right back in the opposite direction, or miss a jump, etc... This problem was not as frequent in the past game.

The difficulty of this game also seems to be much lower than in any of the previous games. I died far less often than I ever expected, except for the last few boss fights... I think this is mostly attributed to the effectiveness of Nero's grab move. Almost every enemy has a weakness for it if you time and position it right, it really makes the game far too easy, on Devil Hunter at least. By the time you're able to play as Dante your character is powerful enough to take on just about anyone with ease, and using his Devil Trigger just makes it that much more of a breeze.

Dante is a much more deep character than Nero, as far as weapons and styles are concerned. What he lacks in abilities he makes for in the various different guns and melee weapons you recieve, which of coarse can all be changed on the fly to create some really crazy looking combos. He doesn't get as many weapons as he did in DMC3, but he's only a secondary character in this game, so I guess I can over look that.

If you've ever played a DMC game in the past then you should already know what to expect from the cutscenes. Over the top, crazy, impossible, retardedly cool stuff that you would only see elsewhere in a Robert Rodriguez movie... maybe. Yes, they're extremely corny, however they weren't nearly as annoying as some of the cutscenes in DMC3, I don't ever want to play as a teenage Dante again. The music is still not to my liking, however it's far from distracting.

A lot of people have made a big deal about the mandatory install feature on the PS3 version of this game. I bought this game for the 360 because, first and foremost I wanted to support Capcom's decision for releasing it on the 360 in the first place, and also for rumble, a last gen feature that I enjoy very much. Load times are extremely short, usually no longer than a few seconds each. I don't know why the PS3 version required this game to be isntalled on the HD, but if the load times worry you on the 360 version, don't be, because they are a complete non issue.

The CE version of the game comes in a slick steelbook case, which Capcom seems to favor these days for their CEs, and rightfully so! The extras on the bonus disc are nothing to write home about, and I'm sure you can find everything online at this point. The CE comes witht he first volume of the DMC anime, which I heard was bad, but I haven't had a chance to actually watch it yet.

Well, I don't know what else to say about the game besides BUY IT. Regardless of which console you own, DMC4 is a extremely solid game that sets the bar for all new action games.
