This is an easy one for me to pick. I was very lucky to be at the Belfry for the Ryder Cup. This was the event that had been postponed for a year following the events of 9/11. In the few previous events, I think the fairest way of putting it would be that patrism had spilled over somewhat. The Belfry event was when the spirit returned. Europe won after a very close three days, but both sides made it a fantastic spectacle.

In the Philippines today it is the AtiAtihan Festival. No-one seems sure what they’re celebrating, but who cares? It’s Mardi Gras!
 

Former West Brom and England centre forward Jeff Astle sadly died on this day in 2002. Tragically, in his later years he made a living singing and telling jokes dressed as Tina Turner.
