don't be so hard on yourself, your not an idiot when you computer acts up you'd be an idiot if you dropped your computer and broke it. Could be a couple of things but for starters i would buy a USB to SCSI power supply to copy over your hard drive info to another source. It might not hurt to redo your system.....but this being a PC i recommend you open it and blow the dust bunnies out of all the vents. Use an air can. Sometimes a PC will power off when its about to get too hot. So theres a good chance that your PC is a little old and building up dust inside keeping it from getting the nice cool air to run efficiently. Powering off is a safety feature on most PC..back in the day your computer would of just fried.

First things that pop to mind, problem with the power supply, or loose connections. Probably just something minor and easy to rectify.
